Hotels in France — What to Expect
France has an extraordinarily diverse accommodation landscape, from the grand palace hotels of Paris — the Ritz, the Bristol, Le Meurice — to chambres d'hôtes (bed and breakfasts), gîtes (self-catering rural cottages), auberges de jeunesse (youth hostels) and modern apartment rentals. The French hotel classification system uses one to five stars, with a separate Palace designation for the most exceptional establishments. Whatever your accommodation type, the French you need to interact with staff follows the same basic patterns.
French hotel staff are generally highly professional, and many will speak English in tourist areas and major cities. However, attempting French — even imperfect French — is invariably appreciated and often results in a warmer, more helpful interaction. In smaller towns and rural areas, English is less reliably available, and your French will matter more practically.

French Floor Numbering
In France, the ground floor is le rez-de-chaussée (abbreviated RdC). What English speakers call the "first floor" is le premier étage in French — one floor above ground level. So if your room is on the "second floor" in French (le deuxième étage), that's three floors above street level by English counting.

Hotel Bills in France
French hotels often add a taxe de séjour (tourist tax) to your bill — a small per-person, per-night charge levied by the local municipality. This is separate from your room rate and is not always included in the quoted price. It's typically between €0.20 and €4 per person per night depending on the hotel's star rating and city.
Types of French Accommodation
Beyond standard hotels, France offers a rich variety of accommodation options that can make your stay more characterful, more local, and sometimes significantly more economical.

Staying in a Chambre d'Hôtes
A chambre d'hôtes is one of the best ways to experience genuine French hospitality and practise your French in a low-pressure environment. Your hosts are typically very pleased when guests make the effort to speak French, and breakfast (le petit-déjeuner) is often an opportunity for a real conversation in French over excellent coffee and fresh croissants.
