How to Type French Accents on Any Device
French uses five accent marks: the acute accent (é), grave accent (à, è, ù), circumflex (â, ê, î, ô, û), diaeresis (ë, ï, ü, ÿ), and cedilla (ç). There's also the ligatures œ and æ. Together these give French 24 accented characters beyond the basic alphabet.
Why accents matter in French
Accents aren't optional decoration — they're part of the word. Ou means "or" but où means "where". A means "has" but à means "at" or "to". Getting them wrong changes the meaning. This tool lets you type correctly even on a keyboard with no French language support installed.
The easiest permanent solution
On Windows: Settings → Time & Language → Language → Add French. On Mac: System Preferences → Keyboard → Input Sources → Add French. On both, you can switch between English and French keyboard with a shortcut (Windows: Win+Space, Mac: Cmd+Space). This gives you a proper French keyboard layout permanently.
