How to Say Dates in French
French dates follow the pattern: le [day number] [month] [year]. The day comes before the month — opposite to American English but similar to Australian English. The first of the month uses "premier" (1er) instead of a number. No "th", "st", "nd" or "rd" endings.
Key rules
- The first: le premier janvier — not le un
- All other days: le deux, le trois, le quinze…
- No capital letters for months or days in French
- Year is read as a whole number: 2024 = deux mille vingt-quatre
Telling the Time in French
French uses a 12-hour conversational system with midi (noon) and minuit (midnight) as special cases. Minutes past the hour use et (and): trois heures et demie (half past three). Minutes to the hour use moins (minus): quatre heures moins le quart (quarter to four). Official and transport timetables use 24-hour time.
